5 Marshawn Lynch Facts That Might Surprise You

Marshawn Lynch, affectionately known as “Beast Mode,” is a retired NFL running back who played 12 seasons. Known for his powerful running style and iconic moments, Lynch is considered one of the most exciting players in NFL history. But there’s more to this Oakland native than just touchdowns and Skittles. Here are five facts about Marshawn Lynch that might surprise you.

1. Lynch Was Drafted by the Buffalo Bills

While most associate Lynch with the Seattle Seahawks, his NFL journey began with the Buffalo Bills. The Bills selected him 12th overall in the 2007 NFL Draft. “I think I was kind of shocked. I didn’t know too much about Buffalo,” Lynch said in a 2019 interview.

He spent three-and-a-half seasons with the Bills, showcasing his raw talent but struggling to consistently reach his full potential. In 2010, he was traded to the Seahawks, where he would ultimately cement his legacy.

2. He’s a Two-Time NFL Rushing Touchdown Leader

Lynch’s physicality and determination made him a nightmare for opposing defenses. He led the NFL in rushing touchdowns in both 2013 and 2014, scoring 12 and 13 touchdowns, respectively.

“Marshawn’s a great runner because he can do everything. He can run over you, he can make you miss, he can catch the ball out of the backfield,” former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson said in a 2014 press conference.

Lynch’s ability to find the end zone was crucial to the Seahawks’ offensive success during their dominant run in the early 2010s.

3. Lynch Had a Brief Retirement…Twice

After the 2015 season, Lynch announced his retirement from the NFL via Twitter, famously tweeting a picture of his cleats hanging from a power line. However, after a year away from football, he returned to the league, signing with his hometown Oakland Raiders.

Lynch played two seasons with the Raiders before retiring again in 2019. He briefly came out of retirement once more in 2020 to play for the Seahawks in their final regular season game and playoff game.

4. He’s a Philanthropist and Entrepreneur

Off the field, Lynch is deeply involved in his community. He founded the Fam 1st Family Foundation, which focuses on empowering youth and combating hunger. He’s also known for his business ventures, including Beast Mode Apparel, a clothing line, and a stake in the Oakland Panthers of the Indoor Football League.

“It’s always been important for me to give back to my community. I want to show kids that anything is possible if you work hard and stay focused,” Lynch said in a 2017 interview.

5. Lynch Is Known for His Quirky Personality

Lynch’s unique personality has made him a fan favorite. He’s known for his hilarious interviews, his love of Skittles, and his aversion to the media.

“I’m just about that action, boss,” Lynch famously said during a Super Bowl media session.

His refusal to conform to the expected behavior of NFL players only added to his charm and mystique.

Marshawn Lynch’s NFL career was marked by incredible on-field achievements and an off-field persona that captivated fans. His powerful running style, dedication to his community, and unapologetic authenticity have left an undeniable mark on the league.
